June 1st is World Milk Day!
By: Meredith Kahn, M.S.
World Milk Day was established in 2001 by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization to serve as a day for celebrating the importance of milk—from its origin, to its nutritional value, to the array of natural milk products that have a significant economic impact throughout the globe. World Milk Day is illustrious in many countries, with this number increasing on a yearly basis.
This day also serves to highlight the vital contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihood and nutrition. The International Dairy Federation uses World Milk Day to promote the importance of milk for a healthy and balanced diet and works to create and run various promotional activities. Members of numerous health organizations also take part in the celebration. While some take the day to celebrate and promote the drinking of milk, others are perhaps more unconventional and seek to use it as a call to action, for example to lower milk prices.
Regardless of motivation, you can likely get involved and participate as a part of the local community related to this holiday. From the United States to Panama, to South Africa and Ireland, World Milk Day serves as a celebratory platform to host events throughout the world.
